Top 5 Croatian Coastal Destinations for cyclists

Picking your summer holiday destination might be even harder when you are an avid cyclist. Are there cycling trails, is it bike-friendly or a dangerous environment and what to see are only some of the questions that come to mind when cyclotourism is your thing.

Fret not because here are 5 outstanding destinations on Croatian coast for you to consider.

Cape Kamenjak

Cape Kamenjak is the go-to place for cycling on the Istrian peninsula. Situated on its southernmost tip, this is a terrain that offers enough of a challenge but doesn’t make it difficult.

It’s the destination of breathtaking views, protected nature with the scent of salt and pines, historical sights such as dinosaur footprints, and much more. Although it’s not made for road bikes, this is the perfect place for any avid cyclist.

Take a break on its rugged coast where you can swim, high water jump, or simply enjoy a drink in a beach bar.

Sibenik

Sibenik, as one of the most beautiful Mediterranean towns, is an unavoidable cycling tourism destination for cultural heritage lovers. With the 15th century Cathedral of St James and St Nicholas’ Fortress, it’s one of the few cities in the world with two monuments protected by UNESCO.

The city’s streets take you through history and living culture, continuously providing the cyclists with new and unexpected discoveries as they pedal.

Its coastline shows a true beauty of nature – an indented bay where the Krka River meets the Adriatic Sea and islands. It offers incredible views of the Sibenik archipelago that will leave you breathless.

Let’s not forget, there are also many nearby places that, as well, offer incredible cycling experiences. E.g. Krka National Park, Zirje island, Murter island etc.

Hvar

The Adriatic island of Hvar is well-known for its wonderful climate, beautiful seascape and rich tradition and culture. In 2020 it was listed as one of the 25 top islands in the world, according to Travel + Leisure magazine. Being a wonder of nature, history and culture it definitely deserved its place among amazing Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Australian, Eastern Asian and other islands.

Be it exploring the town of Hvar, or cycling around the whole island, Hvar is an exceptional experience for cyclists. Simply ride and experience magnificent Adriatic, admire ancient olive trees and enjoy the scent of many lavender fields.

Even Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team often returns to Hvar for their training. Sounds like cycling heaven!

Peljesac Peninsula

There’s a good reason why Peljesac is a favorite for cycling lovers. Whether you prefer cycling down the coastal roads of peninsula or mountain biking steep slopes and valleys, Peljesac offers roads and tracks fitting for everyone.

There are plenty of sights to explore in this exquisite Mediterranean scenery. Many know it as the peninsula of salt, oysters and wine so don’t hesitate to indulge in the wonders of itgastronomic offer.

Of course, we haven’t forgotten about adrenaline lovers. If that’s you, go for a ride on one of the harshest terrains in Croatia and see what your limits are.

Rab

Rab is a great island to discover by bike. With over 340 kilometers of bike trails, wonderful scenery and secluded beaches, it’s perfect for cycling.

The happy island of Rab is famous for sandy beaches, picturesque coves, warm and shallow sea. It’s also known for being one of the hosts of 4 Islands MTB stage race together with islands of Krk, Cres and Losinj. In the five days of the race, participants make around 300 km and 5 500 vertical meters.
